On October 27, KT&G (CEO Bang Kyung-man) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Seongdong-gu Office to foster cleaner, waste-free streets. The signing ceremony took place at the Seongdong-gu Office Strategy Conference Room, attended by Bae Su-min, Managing Director of KT&G’s Sustainability Management Division, and Chong Won-o, Mayor of Seongdong-gu. Under this agreement, the two parties agreed to jointly plan and execute initiatives to build a zero-waste urban environment. As part of the collaboration, KT&G and the Seongdong-gu Office will run a pilot project to install grating filters in the Yeonmujang-gil area of Seongsu-dong. Once an industrial district, the street transformed into a vibrant cultural hub popular with younger generations, raising environmental concerns due to increased foot traffic. The grating filters are designed to fundamentally block street waste from entering the drainage system, offering a new approach to urban waste management. A KT&G official stated, “Through this agreement, KT&G will work together with the Seongdong-gu Office to create cleaner streets and fulfill our social responsibilities as a corporate citizen. We remain committed to practicing sustainable management through a variety of environmental protection initiatives that foster shared growth with the local community.” Meanwhile, KT&G has established its environmental vision, “KT&G Green Impact,” to minimize the company’s environmental footprint and strengthen environmental accountability across its value chain. Under the three pillars of “mitigating climate change,” “accelerating the transition to a circular economy,” and “managing natural capital and protecting biodiversity,” KT&G continues to deploy a broad range of environmental management initiatives.
