On July 24, KT&G (CEO Bang Kyung-man) signed an MOU with the Korea Forest Service and AFoCO (Asian Forest Cooperation Organization) to strengthen cooperation on the restoration and conservation of domestic forests and ESG management. Under the agreement, KT&G will plant tree species suited to local ecosystems and restore vegetation in public and private forests damaged by wildfires. Over the next five years, the company plans to restore a total of 150,000 ㎡ of forestland, including planting 75,000 trees. Following the planting, KT&G will conduct systematic post-management, including monitoring, to ensure the stable establishment of the newly planted forests and enhance the effectiveness of the restoration efforts. KT&G will also carry out public-private collaborative forest restoration through its SangSang Forest program, which involves direct participation from employees. As one of KT&G’s ESG initiatives, SangSang Forest is a forest creation program in which employees and local communities participate together. KT&G COO Lee Sang-hak stated, “The significance of this agreement comes from the fact that it brings together a private corporation, a public institution, and an international organization to collaborate on forest restoration and environmental conservation. We will continue our efforts to contribute to the creation of sustainable domestic forest ecosystems and the meaningful implementation of ESG management.” Meanwhile, KT&G has established its environmental vision, “KT&G Green Impact,” to minimize the company’s environmental footprint and strengthen environmental accountability across its value chain. Under the three pillars of “mitigating climate change,” “accelerating the transition to a circular economy,” and “managing natural capital and protecting biodiversity,” KT&G continues to deploy a broad range of environmental management initiatives.
