KT&G (President Bang Kyung-man) signed an MOU with the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) and Good Wave, a nonprofit organization, on July 22 to jointly promote marine environmental protection initiatives. The signing ceremony was held at KT&G’s headquarters in Seoul and attended by Lee Sang-hak, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of KT&G; Kang Yong-seok, KOEM CEO; and Park Da-ham, Good Wave CEO. Through this agreement, KT&G plans to strengthen marine environmental protection initiatives by establishing a collaborative partnership spanning the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Under the agreement, the three organizations will conduct regular beach cleanups in cooperation with local organizations and volunteers. They will also roll out various campaigns to help prevent marine litter and raise public awareness of marine environmental protection. In particular, they will continue to participate in the “Adopt-a-Beach” program, which promotes cleaner coastal environments. The Adopt-a-Beach program is a public engagement campaign that originated in Texas, the United States, in 1986. It encourages organizations and individuals to “adopt” designated sections of coastline and care for them as they would a companion animal. KT&G plans to designate nine beaches across Korea, including Oido Beach in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, as Adopt-a-Beach sites and voluntarily carry out litter collection, landscape improvements, and other activities at those beaches. Lee Sang-hak, KT&G COO, stated, “As part of our commitment to sustainable management, KT&G has consistently carried out initiatives that create positive environmental and social impact. Moving forward, we will continue fulfilling our corporate social responsibilities, including marine environmental protection, through collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders.” KT&G conducted 206 beach cleanup activities last year, collecting approximately 47,589 kg of marine debris, including Styrofoam buoys and discarded fishing gear. A total of 2,326 participants, including local community activists and KT&G employees, took part in the project.
